January 3, 2008

It's strange, and great, to think that today is already Thursday.  I woke up yesterday and thought it was Monday most of the day.  It's a pleasant surprise to realize the week is already half way over and the weekend is so near!  I love weekends!

I am happy to announce that I have been officially released from the scouting program.  I am so relieved and know that they will find somebody who can do a better job at it than I was.  My new calling is more than I had wanted, but anything is better than what I had.  I am the new first counselor in the Young Women program!  It will be fun because I will be working with the MiaMaids, which is what Heidi's new calling is!  When Brother Elkins asked me if I would take the 'job' I happily exclaimed, "Oh yes!"  Then he asked about scouts and I was free with my complaints and felt bad afterwards.  I told him that I had never served in the YW before and never attended as a teenager so I'm very unfamiliar with the program.  I went a little as a Beehive and went to activities on Wednesdays sometimes and I went every year to Girl's camp, but that's about it.  I laughed when talking to Heidi earlier today as she told me that she's had the same amount, or less experience in the YW as I.  We'll learn together!

We were busy last night and unable to drive to South Salt Lake to pick up John's car again.  So, I am homebound again.  It's nice for me because I don't always have places I 'have' to go to, but always feel the need to leave the house so I spend too much money.  John and I set a New Year's Resolution (one of many it seems) to make a monthly budget and STICK to it!  We used to be so good with our money and had a good savings account, but have slacked the last while and sadly, have forgotten what it's like to save our money.  That's our goal this year!

While the boys were napping this afternoon I had a loud knock on the door followed by a couple rings of the doorbell.  I ran up the stairs to see a scroungy looking man walking away from the door (could it really have taken me that long to run upstairs?).  He said that he noticed our dead pinetree in the back yard and wondered if we wanted it chopped down.  After replying, "Yes! Someday!" He said he would do it right then for $300.  The tree is huge (or should I say was) so $300 sounded pretty good, but I didn't really know.  I told him I'd prefer to talk to my husband in 45 minutes to get his permission.  He thought for a second and said he would do it for $250.  I got the impression they were very poor (his wife was with him) judging by their clothing and truck, etc.  I agreed and then watched him quickly climb the tree with a chainsaw.  His wife got to work shoveling a path through the snow while he started up the chainsaw.  After thinking about them for a minute I got the feeling that I should pay them the full $300.  I was so excited to see them loading up their truck with all the limbs that I was happy to pay them them the original price!  They were quick and efficient!  Yipee!

Later we all went to pick up John's car from his work and came home to chicken salad!  Yummy!  Later John has a basketball game and I have my ER to watch!
